The Mausoleum is made up of various architectural and artistic contributions which transform the site of the massacre into a memorial monument.
What took place at the Ardeatine Caves
The massacre was in reaction to an Italian partisan attack on German troops. 335 men were executed, 10 men for each German soldier who had been killed in the attack.
Attilio Ascarelli
As a distinguished forensic doctor, Ascarelli was appointed to supervise the exhumation and the identification of the corpses.
The Tombs
The tombs house the remains of the victims of the massacre. There are 336: an empty tomb is dedicated to all those who died in massacres carried out by Nazi and Fascist forces in Italy.
The Museum of memorabilia
The memorabilia displayed in the museum reconstruct the historical context for what happened on 23-24 March 1944, in wartime Rome under German occupation.
